A clear, step-by-step guide to In-Vitro Fertilization—the process that helps create families.

Among these, In-Vitro Fertilization (IVF) is the most well-known and successful treatment worldwide. At Parama Fertility, we believe that understanding the process is the first step toward reducing anxiety and achieving success.
Here, we break down the IVF cycle into five easy-to-understand stages.
What is IVF?
IVF is a process of fertilization where an egg is combined with sperm outside the body, in a specialized laboratory dish. The fertilized egg (embryo) is then transferred to the woman’s uterus to hopefully implant and result in a pregnancy.
The Five Stages of a Standard IVF Cycle
1. Ovarian Stimulation (Stimming)
The Goal: To encourage the ovaries to produce multiple mature eggs instead of the single egg produced in a natural cycle.

1. Ovarian Stimulation (Stimming)
The Goal: To encourage the ovaries to produce multiple mature eggs instead of the single egg produced in a natural cycle.
You will take injectable fertility medications for approximately 8–14 days. We monitor your progress closely with blood tests and ultrasounds (follicular monitoring) to ensure the follicles are growing optimally.
2. Egg Retrieval
The Goal: To safely collect the mature eggs from the ovaries.
This is a minor surgical procedure performed under mild sedation. Using ultrasound guidance, the doctor inserts a fine needle through the vagina to gently aspirate the fluid containing the eggs from the follicles. The procedure takes about 20–30 minutes.
3. Fertilization & Embryo Culture
The Goal: To create and grow healthy embryos in the lab.
The retrieved eggs are immediately combined with the prepared sperm (either through standard IVF or ICSI—direct injection of sperm). The resulting embryos are cultured in the incubator for 3 to 5 days, reaching the cleavage or blastocyst stage.
4. Embryo Transfer (ET)
The Goal: To place the best quality embryo(s) into the uterus.
This procedure is quick and painless, similar to a Pap smear. Using a thin, flexible catheter, the doctor transfers the selected embryo(s) to the uterus. This can be done in the same cycle (Fresh Transfer) or a subsequent cycle after freezing (Frozen Embryo Transfer or FET).
5. The Wait (Luteal Phase) & Pregnancy Test
The Goal: Waiting for implantation and confirming pregnancy.
After the transfer, the patient continues progesterone and estrogen support. Approximately 9 to 14 days later, a blood test (Beta hCG) is performed to confirm pregnancy. This is often the hardest part—the “Two-Week Wait“—but our team is here to support you.
