Advanced Surgical Sperm Retrieval for Male Infertility at Paramaa Fertility & Women Care Centre

Male infertility is a significant factor in nearly half of all infertility cases. In some men, sperm may not be present in the semen (a condition known as azoospermia), making natural conception impossible. However, advances in reproductive medicine now make it possible to retrieve sperm directly from the testicles and use it for fertilization.

TESA (Testicular Sperm Aspiration) is a specialized procedure that allows sperm retrieval in such cases. At Paramaa Fertility & Women Care Centre, TESA and other sperm retrieval techniques are performed under the expert supervision of Dr. Paramita Hazari, offering hope to couples facing severe male infertility.

What is TESA?

TESA (Testicular Sperm Aspiration) is a minimally invasive procedure in which sperm is directly extracted from the testicular tissue using a fine needle. The retrieved sperm is then used in assisted reproductive techniques such as ICSI (Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection).

Unlike conventional semen analysis, where sperm is collected through ejaculation, TESA bypasses this pathway and retrieves sperm directly from the source.

Understanding Azoospermia

TESA is primarily used in cases of azoospermia, which can be of two types:

Obstructive Azoospermia

Sperm is produced in the testes but cannot reach the semen due to a blockage in the reproductive tract.

Non-Obstructive Azoospermia

Sperm production is very low or absent, but small numbers of sperm may still be retrieved directly from the testicular tissue.

TESA is particularly useful in both these conditions.

Who Needs TESA?

TESA may be recommended in the following situations:

  • Absence of sperm in semen analysis
  • Previous vasectomy
  • Blockage in vas deferens
  • Failed sperm retrieval through other methods
  • Severe male infertility
  • Cases requiring ICSI with surgically retrieved sperm

Each patient undergoes thorough evaluation before the procedure is advised.

TESA Procedure: Step-by-Step

TESA is a short, minimally invasive procedure performed under local or mild anesthesia.

1.  Preparation

The patient is prepared and local anesthesia is administered to ensure comfort.

2.  Needle Aspiration

A fine needle is inserted into the testis, and tissue samples are aspirated.

3.  Sperm Identification

The sample is examined in the laboratory to identify viable sperm.

4.  Use in ICSI

Retrieved sperm is used immediately or frozen for future ICSI cycles.
